Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Environmental Science programme. The position is available from 1 January 2024 or later.
Title:
Computational Non-Target Chemical Analysis
Research area and project description:
This PhD project is located at the Environmental Metabolomics Lab, Department of Environmental Science and seeks to develop and optimise cheminformatic tools to improve the molecular annotation in environmental non-target chemical analysis.
Environmental non-target chemical analysis with high-resolution mass spectrometry is a rapidly developing field of research. A typical study will reveal thousands chemical substances, however, with the current data processing and analysis methods, we can typically annotate less than 5% of the detected molecules.
This PhD project aims to develop and optimise cheminformatic tools to improve the molecular annotation of the dark chemical space obtained in non-target chemical analysis of environmental samples. The PhD fellow will work with e.g. machine-learning methods, network analysis, and PFAS data analysis pipelines.
The PhD fellowship is funding by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and will synergise with national and international research projects. The research is in collaboration with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, University of Tübingen and University of Amsterdam.
Environmental Metabolomics Lab
The lab studies and identifies emerging environmental pollutants, i.e. ecosystem pollutants that pose a risk to wildlife and public health. By conducting fundamental lab and field experiments at the molecular level, we investigate the environmental occurrence, fate, and effects of pollutants, such as natural toxins, pesticides and medicine residues.
Our interdisciplinary research lies at the interface of analytical and computational chemistry and toxicology and is based on state-of-the-art mass spectrometry for targeted and non-targeted analysis for metabolome and exposome characterizations.

Qualifications and specific competences:
The position requires knowledge within analytical and computational chemistry, as well as experimental work and the ability to solve practical challenges. Experience with Orbitrap (GC-HRMS or LC-HRMS) systems and data, non-targeted chemical analysis or untargeted metabolomics, and programming, such as R, MATLAB, Python, is mandatory. Good oral and written communication skills, a good team spirit and collaborative skills are mandatory. The candidate is expected to be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary international academic environment. The applicant needs to hold a MSc degree.
The PhD fellow is expected to:
- Cooperate and supervise with other PhD students, postdocs, student workers and other researchers in designing and carrying out experimental work
- Take an active scientific role in research projects, participating in seminars, workshops and summer schools, and fostering good team spirit
- Take active part in developing and enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration both internally and externally
