Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the INDIGMA (experiences of (in)dignity from the margins) project from September 1st 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position is two years with the possibility of an additional year of teaching activities including the opportunity to further their qualifications by completing the university teaching accreditation program (adjunktpædagogikum).

Description of the Postdoc position
The postdoc is part of the research project INDIGMA funded by the Velux Foundations and led by Magnus Paulsen Hansen and Sabina Pultz. As Postdoc you will be part of a collaborative team together with two PhD students, and the two co-PIs.
The concept of human dignity is one of the clearest points of ‘overlapping consensus’ in the Western world. But with the widespread rise of autocratic and xenophobic sentiments the foundation for upholding the consensus is trembling. Many point to the experience of indignity of the ‘left-behinds’ to be driving this trend. However, we know very little about how this plays out at an individual level. What makes citizens feel included or excluded, worthy or unworthy in society? How may encounters with the labor market and welfare state institutions give rise to the experience of dignity or indignity?

INDIGMA will explore these questions through ethnographic studies and shadowing of unemployed people.

INDIGMA is a cross-national comparative project that explores the link between unemployment and dignity by investigating situated experiences deeply entangled with local institutions and socioeconomic structures.

INDIGMA investigates how experiences of (in)dignity are shaped and the ways in which unemployed people relate to and evaluate themselves and their surroundings. In other words, it investigates the psychology and politics of such experiences to answer the research question: How do unemployed people from the margins experience (in)dignity?

We investigate the research question through three case studies in Denmark, France and the US respectively.
Inspired by the by the Marienthal study (Jahoda et al.1972), we intend to follow people at the margins of the labor market (formally unemployed at least 6 months, age: 18-60) in a smaller community at the margins (http://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/frontpage.htm and https://www.workindenmark.dk
