Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as assistant professor of Health & Society from August 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as assistant professor is limited to 3 years.
The position is part of a research project investigating social, organizational and ethical aspects of surveillance technologies for persons with dementia, headed by Professor Nete Schwennesen and funded by Alzheimerforeningen.
The study utilizes ethnographic methods to explore the intricate relationship between dementia care and surveillance technologies, focusing on the tension between balancing dignity and ensuring safety and well-being. You will become a member of the Health and Society Research Group at the Department of People and Technology, which is a dynamic and interdisciplinary research group, investigating health-related issues across a wide range of methods and scientific disciplines (sociology, anthropology, social psychology, health education, nursing science, public health science and biostatistics).

Responsibilities and tasks
Apart from research and publications the assistant professor’s work will include obligations with regard to research-based teaching and project supervision with associated examination obligations at BA level (Humanistisk-Teknologisk Bachelor) and MA level (Tværvidenskabelige Sundhedsstudier). Both programmes are taught in Danish. In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position also requires share of knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in public debate.
The candidate is expected to:
- Plan and carry out ethnographic research on surveillance technologies in dementia care
- Analyze data and publish research in international journals
- Participate in international conferences and seminarsTeach and supervise at BA and MA level with emphasis on socio-technical aspects of digital health technologies
- Complete the educational training programme for assistant professors at RUC.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within anthropology, sociology, public health, interdisciplinary health studies or equivalent.
Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required:
- Substantive experience with ethnographic methods and elder care as a research field
- Ability to navigate in a complex ethical field and to collaborate with health practitioners
- Knowledge on dementia and surveillance technologies
- Ability to teach and supervise in Danish on the interaction between humans and digital health technologies and interdisciplinary health studies
- Interest in the translation of research into practice

- research topic,
- scientific production,
- research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
- experience in teaching and education,
- other academic experience e.g. from organizing research conferences or seminars,
- ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,

Terms of employment
The employment is full time on and you will refer to Bjarke Oxlund, Dean of Technology and Health Sciences, Department of People and Technology.
The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.
