Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD of Business Studies from 1st of February 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years.
Business Studies
As a PhD student you will be associated with the Business Studies research community at the department, an interdisciplinary group of over twenty members of faculty and PhD students researching widely within areas of management, organization, and sustainable innovation, and delivering courses on the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration.
The Business Studies section includes the following research groups.
The Innovation in Service and Experience (ISO) research group conducts cutting-edge research addressing major research questions concerning (among others) the practices that foster the engagement of users, employees, stakeholders, entrepreneurs and other actors in public and private service innovation; how can tourism be developed in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable way; why are experiences a central aspect of today’s economies, what characterizes valuable experiences and how are they developed; how digitalization, more recently, Artificial Intelligence, affects services and with what consequences for service organizations and customers/citizens.
The Management and Organization research group (MANORG) works on organization, management and leadership from a variety of different perspectives. This includes research activities in leadership, sustainability, organization theory, organizational change, human resource management, project management, digitalization, CSR and legitimacy, ethics and law, technology, as well as philosophy of management.
Members of the Risk, Uncertainty and Opportunity (RUNOP) research group investigate a wide range of topics related to a behavioural view of the firm and of decision-making, including risk and uncertainty; cognition and sensemaking; strategy and innovation; investor behaviour and finance; talent migration and entrepreneurship; accounting and auditing; and management more generally.
PhD students can benefit from and contribute to research activities in one or more of these groups. Proposed PhD projects should be within the research interest of the research groups. Please consult the Roskilde University website for more information.
The Doctoral School
You will be enrolled as a PhD fellow at the Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Business counting approximately 40 PhD fellows from all over the world.
The Doctoral School of Social Sciences & Business (ISE) provides PhD training and research within an interdisciplinary, international, and professional environment. It is part of a dynamic community of researchers who share a commitment to understanding society in diverse contexts of change and global engagement. Researchers come from all over the world and engage in topics that are geographically, theoretically, and methodologically diverse. The Doctoral School has one PhD program. The program offers work in progress seminars, thematic professional development seminars, paper feedback, and social activities for the enrolled PhD fellows. As a PhD fellow you will be part of a relevant research group at the department.
Responsibilities and tasks
As a PhD fellow you are trained to undertake research at an international level. You are responsible for carrying out independent research under supervision of expert researchers. During your employment you are required to take 30 ECTS of course work and gain experience of teaching activities. You are also required to have a research environmental change during your PhD enrollment. The environment change can take place at foreign or local universities or research institutions. Qualifications
Applicants must hold a relevant Master of science or arts degree in business administration, business studies, management, economics, social sciences, or equivalent. Besides the scientific quality and feasibility of the proposed PhD project, independent research demonstrated by the applicant usually through a Master’s thesis or similar with excellent grades will be emphasized. In addition, the applicant must have high level of proficiency in English, and basic spoken and written Danish skills, or willingness to learn this.
You are required to be enterprising and to possess good communication skills and to be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.
Assessment
In the assessment regarding employment, consideration will be given to;
- Relevant Master’s degree or equivalent (according to Danish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education
- Any additional academic requirements stated in the job advertisement.
In addition, consideration will also be given to the following:
- Educational skills and any further professional qualifications
- Grades at Master’s programme or equivalent
- Quality and relevance of the project description
- The quality and relevance of the methodical and theoretical choices
- The consistency and coherence between the problem and the choice of method and theory
- The realistic and feasible scope of the PhD project
- Considerations regarding ethical aspects, if relevant
- Ability to complete the PhD project
- Relevance of the project to the profile of the Doctoral School
- Your project description should be no more than 5 pages

Terms of employment
The employment is full time, 37 hours per week and you will refer to Dean Morten Frederiksen. The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities

After the deadline for applications the Dean will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.
Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.
The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.
