Assistant professor in business studies with a focus on corporate finance and data analytics at Roskilde University

Offering an established interdisciplinary social science environment, the Department of Social Sciences and Business at Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as assistant professor in Business Studies in the field of corporate finance or financial accounting with strong data analytical skills. The position is available from January 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to 4 years.

The business context of today is complex and in constant flux creating challenges and dilemmas for how companies behave and interact in and with society. Flux and complexity also characterize the availability and use of data science in still more sophisticated ways. Our department looks to develop its research and teaching in the field of business and data analytics with a focus on corporate finance or financial accounting with strong data analytical skills of relevance predominantly for small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). We particularly welcome applicants with innovative takes and/or ideas on research for instance in:

  • Corporate finance or financial accounting applying strong data analytical skills preferably related to small and medium-sized enterprises
  • Financial accounting and/or management accounting preferably related to SMEs.
  • Data science in changing contexts for SME (e.g. introduction of AI, LLM, big data etc.)
  • Applying data analytics to decision making and control preferably related to SMEs.
  • SME/business budgetary and financial management.

The list is not to be considered exclusive but points to the complex relationships between businesses, SMEs and data analytics in challenging contexts.

We are especially interested in applicants who thrive in an interdisciplinary research and education environment and are eager to contribute to the development of our business programmes at BA, MA, and PhD levels as well as lifelong learning.

Our department conducts excellent, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research based on anthropology, business studies, development studies, economics, legal studies, public administration, political science, and sociology. We offer an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment characterized by academic and methodological diversity in research and education. Our faculty put a strong emphasis on research methodologies and are dedicated to gaining insights into businesses and society in diverse contexts of change and global engagement. We produce research at the highest international level that feeds into our educational programmes, while simultaneously leveraging our research to impact social, economic, and political change. Research in the department is organized in research groups. The selected candidate is expected to join the Business Section at Roskilde University and one of the research groups within the section.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your daily work will consist primarily of research, research-based teaching at BA and MA level in our Business Studies programmes, research dissemination, and administrative tasks.

As assistant professor we expect you to maintain a steady rate of high-level research publications. We expect further that you take part in attracting research grants and other types of external funding; manage research projects; form part of linking the department to societal organisations; participate actively in one or two research group(s) at the department and constantly strife to improve the research culture and academic citizenship at the department; partake in the development of our teaching activities; and take part in various administrative tasks requested by the department. There may be a possibility for entering a tenure track adjunct programme when such a program becomes operational at Roskilde University late 2026 or early 2027.

The ideal candidate at the level of assistant professor is expected to
  • develop a field of expertise beyond the scope of the doctoral thesis
  • accomplish research meeting international standards
  • contribute to the development of the research profile of the department
  • collaborate with colleagues in establishing a vibrant research community
  • contribute to relevant teaching programmes
  • contribute to the long-term well-being of the department
  • perform minor administrative tasks
  • show interest in project-based teaching and teaching in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • complete the educational training programme “Certificate of University Teaching and Learning’ (CUTL).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, the candidate holds a relevant PhD and matches most the following characteristics:
  • International research profile within the academic field of business and data analytics as it relates to corporate finance or financial accounting
  • Documented research production at an international level, including publications in internationally recognized journals/publishing houses related to finance or accounting
  • Higher education teaching experience within topics of social sciences

Ability to teach in Danish is an asset and successful candidates who do not speak Danish (or possibly Swedish or Norwegian) will be requested to acquire the necessary skills in Danish within the first two years of service, to ensure that they can participate satisfactorily in teaching activities as well as in academic and administrative activities at the university. At the time of appointment, successful candidates must master English for academic purposes. Terms of employment
The employment is full-time, and you will refer to the Head of Department. The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.
