The Department of Communication and Arts (DCA), Roskilde University, invites applications for an assistant professorship or associate professorship in Digitalisation with a focus on digital methods, to be filled from August 15th 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

We are looking for candidates with a strong research profile and an ambitious research plan who – together with colleagues – want to contribute to Roskilde University’s strategy and to the further development of the department’s excellent, impactful research at the intersection of culture, communication and media.

Your research should be grounded in a relevant research field such as history, cultural studies, communication studies, journalism studies, media studies, sociology, anthropoloty, data science or another discipline/field relevant to the department. The ideal candidate wants to enhance their already interdisciplinary research profile or develop their current research profile in an interdisciplinary direction, in alignment with the university’s strategy and department’s research profile.

As the department wants to strengthen its competences within digital methods (in relation to research as well as teaching), this will be a special focus of this position.

About us
DCA is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment. Our research is characterized by diversity with respect to theories, methods and areas of study in research and teaching. The department produces knowledge that contributes to critical research and reflexive practice in relation to development and change in society, including public institutions, private organizations, NGOs, and cultural and media institutions. Responsibilities and tasks
The position will primarily include research including publication/academic dissemination and research-based teaching including examination and course coordination at an international level. The position also entails public dissemination of knowledge, including participation in public debate. An associate professor’s tasks may also include performance of research management, educational guidance, and supervision of assistant professors as well as academic assessment work.

You are expected to teach both MA and BA levels across programs and assistant professors are expected to complete the educational training programme for assistant professors at RUC. Teaching at Roskilde University requires an interdisciplinary approach and involves supervising problem-oriented project work (PPL – read more here). Candidates are expected to undertake teaching assignments in two or more programmes offered by the department and are asked to motivate which programs they would like to teach in their application.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a relevant PhD degree. The ideal candidate is expected to:

  • Undertake research in digitalization with an emphasis on digital methods
  • Have a profile relevant for teaching at two or more programmes offered by the department
  • Contribute actively to the strategy of the university and the department

Moreover, the following qualifications are required:
  • Documented international publication record with relevance for the requirements of the position
  • Documented research profile relevant for the department and its further development
  • preferably, documented experience in teaching digital methods
  • Preferably, the applicant has documented experience with public dissemination of research and media communication

Exclusively for associate professor:
  • Documented research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be expected on associate professor level (see faculty expectations)
  • Documented training in teaching and university pedagogy, preferably with relevance to Roskilde University’s educational profile, project-oriented project learning, PPL

Assessment
In the assessment of candidates for a position as assistant professor consideration will be given to;
  • Research topic
  • Scientific production
  • Research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • Experience in teaching and education
  • Other academic experience e.g. from organizing research conferences or seminars
  • Ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary collaboration in research and/or teaching
  • Digital methods competences
  • The teaching needs of the department


In the assessment of candidates for a position as associate professor consideration will be given to;
  • Research topic
  • Scientific production beyond the contribution from the PhD
  • Research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • Experience in teaching and education development and management
  • Academic experience basis, preferably including international academic experience, e.g. from reviewing or editing academic papers and/or from organizing research conferences or seminars
  • Ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation
  • Digital methods competences
  • The teaching needs of the department

The ideal candidate is enterprising, possesses good communication skills, is visible and involved in the department’s daily activities, and is motivated by engangement across the department.

Terms of employment
The employment is full time and you will refer to the Dean.

Within a reasonable period of time (max. 2 years), non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient to be able to interact with colleagues and teach and supervise students.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Dean will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
