Do you have a passion for structural design and testing which are creating solutions for the world's green transition? You will be part of a research group that develops future structural design tools and testing methods for very large wind turbine structures.

DTU Wind & Energy Systems invites applications with a talent and passion for structural analysis and testing for a position as a Development Engineer at DTU Large Scale Facility – a university lab testing wind turbine structures. DTU Wind & Energy Systems is the world’s leading university department in wind energy. DTU Large Scale Facility is a state-of-the-art structural test facility capable of testing wind turbine blades up to 45 m and was last year evaluated to be of highest international quality and recognized to be part of a truly unique world leading research center. Besides doing advanced structural testing and measurements, we are also making the facility an internationally recognized development and demonstration lab for Digital Twins and related digitalization technologies. Our projects have won prizes such as the JEC Composites Innovation Award 2024 in the Digital, AI & Data category.

The job
We seek a Development Engineer who can deal with complex test projects in collaboration with researchers, technicians and project managers. You will join a cross-disciplinary, international team working on developing design tools and testing methods for wind turbine structures and components. We are doing this by collaborating with key industry players in the wind energy industry. The particular areas of responsibilities include:

  • Testing and analysis of composite structures such as wind turbine blades, carried out on several scale levels (full size, sub-scale components etc.) and from different points of view: static strength, fatigue life, modal analysis.
  • Experimental validation using advanced measurement systems.
  • Reporting and documentation of test results following proper data management systems.
  • In the daily work, you will report to Head of Section and work in a team of engineers and technicians.

Our expectations of you
You have an education as a mechanical or civil engineer or similar. You are likely early in your career with a drive to learn new skills. Perhaps you already have a broad technical background and a good understanding of structural testing. Whether you’re experienced our recently graduated, good communication skills, patience and a positive attitude to working in a team are essential requirements for the successful applicant.

Furthermore, it is a great benefit in this position if you have some of the following backgrounds and qualifications – or a strong motivation to gain them: 

  • Strong skills in structural testing and preferably with wind turbine blades or other composite structures.
  • Work experience with test controllers and data acquisition systems.
  • Work experience with different sensors and measurement technologies.
  • Experience with design, manufacturing and setting up of customized test rigs.
  • Experience with hydraulic test equipment and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience with manufacturing of fiber-reinforced plastic composites.

In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will also be given to:

  • Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas.
  • Structured and organized person so results are reported with high quality.
  • Practical sense of structural response and understanding for what a good test is.
  • Ability to work independently towards project goals and collaborate with engineers, researchers and technicians.
  • Excellent in communicating, reading and writing English.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) or other relevant agreement.
