– Lab scale investigations related to the integration of pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion

About the position
Climate change increasingly threatens our livelihoods, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial. By replacing biomass of a fossil origin with renewable bioresources, we can transition towards a more sustainable future.

The TRANSITIONS research group is seeking a highly motivated experimental student assistant to support laboratory activities related to anaerobic digestion (AD) and pyrolysis (PY), two key bioresource technologies. The position is part of the PytoCCUS research project, which explores innovative integrations of AD and PY for climate mitigation.

Your role
As a student assistant, you will be an active contributor to ongoing research activities and gain hands-on laboratory experience. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Running, monitoring, and maintaining laboratory experiments
  • Delivering high-quality empirical data for research projects
  • Contributing to technical reports and scientific publications
  • Supporting experimental development from concept to execution
  • Performing analytical and ad hoc characterization tasks

Research focus
Within the PytoCCUS project, your work will involve:
  • Reducing odour emissions from point sources through AD–PY integration
  • Producing biochar with enhanced gas-cleaning properties
  • Optimizing anaerobic digestion through the use of biochar
  • Supporting analytical characterization of materials and processes

Your profile
We are looking for a student who:
  • Can work safely in a laboratory environment (prior experience is not required but an advantage)
  • Is able to work independently and responsibly
  • Thrives in a dynamic research setting where experimentation does not always follow a linear path
  • Has a genuine interest in bioresource technologies and sustainability

What we offer
  • Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art biotechnologies
  • Close involvement in impactful climate and energy research
  • Development of academic and professional skills relevant for a future research career
  • Flexible working hours that can be adapted to your study schedule
  • Possibility to work remotely on reports and written tasks

Eligibility
We encourage both bachelor’s and master’s students with an interest in the subject to apply. The position can be structured to fit alongside coursework and other educational responsibilities.
