Clinical functions and focus areas of the department
One of the focus areas of the department both clinically and scientifically, is breast reconstruction in breast cancer patients.
This includes conventional techniques, such as implant or expander insertions, but also local and distant flap plasty and now also the entire field of microsurgical free flap breast reconstruction.
Both in the pre-operative, peri-operative and post-operative follow-up of patients, there are clinically as well as scientifically numerous important issues that should result in a speedy and better treatment of this group of patients. But also the implementation of new technologies such as 3D printed implants and the use of robotic surgical assistance systems will be clinically introduced and scientifically accompanied. The aim is to help build up a department that operates innovatively at the highest international level and to make it visible.
Research and teaching
With the new Clinical Professor of Plastic and Breast Surgery with a focus on reconstruction, the Department of Plastic Surgery aims to strengthen its leadership role in clinical research and teaching.
We expect clinical research of international level and quality in the field of reconstructive breast surgery.
The clinical research unit in our department currently includes two other senior investigators who support a number of junior scientists, some of who are PhD students.
This position provides an opportunity to lead the clinical research unit, and we expect to contribute significantly to the continued development of our clinical research unit in general.
Our department is heavily involved in the education and teaching of medical students. We pride ourselves on providing good courses for our upcoming colleagues, and participation in these will be an important responsibility.
