If you are hoping for a career in industrial R&D or academia, and you are interested in the production of low carbon energy, in particular wind energy, and its modeling challenges, then this subject may interest you.

DTU Wind and the Department of Fluid Dynamics, Energy and Environment (MFEE) at Electricité De France R&D (EDF R&D) invite applications for a position as an industrial PhD student in Wind Farm Design and Control as a part of the AptWind Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network. It is an industrial doctorate where you will spend 50 % of the time at DTU Wind and 50 % of the time at Electricité De France in France.

We need  a passionate, curious, and enthusiastic new team member committed to addressing climate change through advancing renewable energy systems. We're searching for someone who flourishes in the face of complex problems, isn't afraid to ask probing questions, and possesses the grit to pursue innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving field.

You will get  the chance to  evolve in both academia and industry and in two countries, Denmark (campus located in Risø, near Roskilde, 30 minutes from Copenhagen) and France (R&D center located in Chatou, Paris suburbs). You will also have the opportunity to benefit from advanced training in various European universities, and from scientific discussions in a rich context since this PhD project will be part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action Doctoral Network (MSCA DN) "Atmospheric Physics and Turbulence for Wind energy" (AptWind)

You will investigate the following topics

  • Uncertainty quantification in engineering and CFD wind farm flow models
  • Multi-fidelity optimization and surrogate modeling of wind farms
  • Impact of wind farm design and open-loop control uncertainties on Annual Energy Production

You are  a committed individual with a strong engineering or computer science background. You have a keen interest in scientific programming and machine learning. Your curiosity guides you to explore and understand the intricacies of wind energy systems, and your self-guided nature encourages you to push the limits of what is today possible for a better tomorrow.

You have  a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree and some international experience, for general eligibility criteria, see https://www.aptwind.eu/eligibility.

We offer  you the opportunity to be a part of AptWind, which will not only facilitate fifteen DCs in reaching a high level of technical and project-specific excellence but will also provide you with many opportunities for developing skills that are transferable to a broader landscape of opportunities. You will share your work time 50-50 between academia and industry. After completing the program, you will have a thorough understanding of the process from research via innovation to industry implementation and a strong career-defining network.

AptWind is funded by Horizon Europe through grant number 101119550. See www.aptwind.eu for more information.

The AptWind Doctoral Network  provides training for a new creative, entrepreneurial, innovative, and resilient industry-oriented academic generation apt to face current and future challenges at the frontier of research within atmospheric flow physics and turbulence for wind energy applications, where the trained Doctoral Candidates (DCs) will be able to convert knowledge and ideas into new products, and services for economic and social benefit.

Wind and Energy System Department is  a mission-oriented organisation focused on accelerating the development and integration of wind based energy systems. EDF is a renowned global leader in energy, focused on building a net zero energy future with electricity and innovative solutions and services by paving the way for a more sustainable energy mix, with a portfolio of energy sources including hydro, solar, wind, and nuclear power.
