The PhD-school at the Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD Fellow in the PhD programme in Information Technology from January 1st, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD Fellow is limited to a period of three years.

Description of the PhD project
The PhD fellow will be part of the research project ”Energy Labelling Websites,” funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and led by Associate Professor Maja H. Kirkeby at Computer Science, Roskilde University. The project is collaborating with Prof. Kerstin Eder from University of Bristol, UK, and Aveo A/S, a company in Denmark that develops WordPress sites and is investigating ways to reduce WordPress sites’ energy consumption.

In this project, our aim is to develop energy labels that enable a robust energy-efficiency ranking of web-based software modules. By replacing a module with a more energy-efficient alternative, we hope to improve the overall energy efficiency of web-based systems. To achieve this, we will conduct a case study using a sufficiently large web-based modular software system. We have chosen WordPress as our case study, as it is web-based and each WordPress website is created by selecting a set of modules (plugins and themes) from a catalogue of nearly 60,000 modules.

As a PhD fellow, you will be expected to develop fair and useful energy labels for software modules that enable a robust energy-efficiency ranking of web-based software modules. These will be the first of its kind. A preliminary study has shown that this will involve identifying functional equivalence classes of modules, identifying the parameters that influence energy consumption, experimentally developing an energy-efficiency index that addresses the most influential energy parameters, and conducting robust quality evaluations of modules. Additionally, within the project, we will need to extend the cutting-edge measuring methodology to end-user devices such as laptops and mobile phones.

As a PhD fellow, you will be a part of the Computer Science community and research within the new area Energy Consumption and sustainable IT; you are expected to disseminate new findings at international conferences and journals and participate in network strengthening activities, e.g., seminars, courses, and schools. In addition, we expect the PhD fellow to have a research stay at the University of Bristol.

The Doctoral School
The successful candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the PhD-School of People and Technology and associated with the program in Information Technology. He or she will be a member of the research group Programming, Logic and Intelligent Systems: https://forskning.ruc.dk/en/organisations/programmering-logik-og-intelligente-systemer.

The PhD-School for People and Technology frames research that seeks to address sustainability often by applying experimental approaches and situating the individuals' active and learning involvement. The research comprises approaches of a human, societal, health and information technological character and often applies planning, interventions and design-oriented subject areas. The Doctoral School has 5 PhD programmes with each of their focus points: Information Technology; Learning, Working life and Social innovation; Research in Health and Society; Social Psychology of Everyday Life and Society, Space and Technology. You will be associated with the program in Information Technology.
