Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD from 1st of March 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years.

The PhD project
The PhD will form part of the project CONSIDERATION - COmpeteNceS - Inclusive Digital grEen tRAnsformaTION.

The project aims to assist SMEs in improving competitiveness and sustainability through digitalization support and an inclusive change management approach through competency development for both management and employees. On an open-source platform, the project is developing a Digital Strategy Development Tool with a set of sub-tools for sustainability evaluation/reporting, business data management and analytics, digital business models, skills evaluation and planning as well as didactics for digital, blended and hybrid learning. As the project supports digital competency development by addressing motivation and training for both management and staff within different topics, the development process will involve several open seminars and workshops in which SMEs give feedback to the development of the tool(s). The project has 8 project partners and 12 associated partners in both Denmark, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and Sweden. The universities participating in CONSIDERATION is besides Roskilde University (RUC - LEAD of the project), also Kazimiero Simonaviciaus universitetas (KSU) in Lithuania, and University of Szczecin (USz) in Poland.

The independent research in the project is created while at the same time developing the tools and the learning platform.

The empirical data for the PhD project include the South Baltic geographic area and the cases involved in the CONSIDERATION project. The empirical data are to be generated through the collaborative project.

The research element of this R&D project needs to grasp with the complexity of how SMEs become data-driving and use digital tools to stay competitive while transitioning towards sustainability, reach out for new markets, while also protecting the data, and to up- and reskill both managers and staff in and by using ICT-tools, as well as taking the time and resource limitations in SMEs seriously. This is what the project CONSIDERATION’s idea offers. Thus, the research question addresses this conundrum of issues. Also, it must take seriously, that if consultants develop a digitalization strategy for the SME, it is often not implemented and further developed afterwards. Experience shows that digital transformation must be learned so that it becomes an operative competence for the company. The SMEs need to work with the strategy themselves and take ownership of the strategy. So how can we develop tools with such a learning purpose? Research needs to support this development process, as there are not sufficient empirical and theoretical understanding of how SMEs in a mainly rural area as the South Baltic region, lagging the country averages of digitalization, can gain strategic competences for digitalization and sustainability simultaneously through digital tools and a learning platform.

The PhD Project is using action research, design science and social systems theoretical approaches combined with a thorough insight into a the interdisciplinarity of the twin transition of digitalization and sustainability, including competency development as well as business, organization, and network change management. The PhD project participates in content as well as course material and course development in relation to the Digital Strategy Development Tool and its sub-tools. This also involves testing with trainers and SMEs and updating the content, course material and courses with SMEs as the target group. Besides the content, course material and course development, the PhD-project takes part in workshops, conferences, and general communication to all relevant stakeholders, including the scientific community.

The applicant can request further materials linked to the project, both the project description and scientific contributions.
