Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD from 1st of March 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years.

The PhD project
The opening of the Fehmarn Belt connection in 2029 landlocks Region Zealand with Northern Germany. The PhD project is about “Taking the initiative in the DE-DK Interreg-region” and will form part of the project Fehmarn Belt Learning Network: “Dannelsesregionen | Bildungsregion”.

The mission of the overall Fehmarn Belt Learning Network: “Dannelsesregionen | Bildungsregion” is to drive innovation in education by improving the capacity of pupils, students, teachers, lecturers and to upskill the future workforce with the necessary technical knowledge, creative abilities, language, intercultural and project management skills, so they can build a more sustainable and coherent cross-border region. The project is further described (in Danish) here: https://www.regionsjaelland.dk/regional-udvikling/internationalt-samarbejde/femern-baelt-dannelsesregionen and in German here: https://tzl.de/2023/07/13/deutsch-daenische-kooperation-21-mioe-von-der-eu-zur-foerderung-von-bildung-und-jugend-in-der-fehmarnbelt-region/. An English description can be requested.

The aims of research in the PhD project is to conduct research during theongoing construction of the Fehmern belt connection to improve the quality of leadership and collaboration within all subgoals of the project through the development of better facilitation and collaboration methods. As the leadership culture, and expectations on how to collaborate are different in Denmark and Germany, it is imperative to gain a better research-based knowledge about the differences and how to bridge the cultural differences when leading Danish-German collaborations. The meaning of "taking the initiative" in Danish-German collaborations must be uncovered, described, analyzed, and theorized in scientific studies of the collaborative relationships in the project and other Interreg collaborations. This is done to create a research-based awareness and digital learning resources about how to take initiative and how to tackle barriers related to discrepancies in ways of understanding the meaning of taking and receiving leadership. The research is to develop new iterations of new methods for facilitation and co-creation.

The PhD-project will participate in all parts of the overall project and conduct interviews, observations, and participative research. There is an interaction with all project partners who reversely contribute to the shared knowledge, learning and implementation of the findings. All other project partners will be open for interviews, observations, workshops, and other forms of data creating activities, and as being target groups for the research results Also, the PhD-project is expected to collaborate in disseminating the research findings for both scientific scholars and through workshops, field work reports (part 1 and 2) and learning materials for practitioners. The PhD-project is responsible for sharing the research findings, while on the other hand Næstved Municipality is responsible for transforming the research into tangible reusable learning products in format of 1 digital self-instructed course and 1 science based popular publication and dissemination workshop. The PhD-project takes part in these activities by using a participatory research approach combined with social systems theory combined with a thorough insight into leadership and network theories.

The cross-border collaboration in the project allows for a unique opportunity to address the differences in leadership and collaboration practices between Germany and Denmark, and to develop innovative facilitation and collaboration methods that improve the ability to reach the overall goals of the project. The knowledge can be transferred to other cross-border projects, which will be of importance for the enhancement of the Danish-German collaboration (or other cross-border projects elsewhere) in a foreseeable future. This research can only be effectively achieved through cross-border cooperation, as it requires the participation of both German and Danish project partners to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the cultural and organizational differences between the two countries.
