Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking applicants for PhD scholarship in wind energy research in the suburban area of beautiful Copenhagen, Denmark. Job description and responsibilities
Modern wind turbines are the largest rotating machines on Earth and the diameter of pitch bearings is at least several meters. Reliability issues on these large mechanical components are on the rise, which are yet to be addressed to enable wind energy to supply its expected share of the carbon-free energy system of the future.
Of particular interest are PhD candidates who are interested in theoretical, computational, and experimental studies of mechanical components within wind turbines, such as pitch bearings and their connecting structures which allows wind turbine blades to rotate. The successful candidate will have access to extensive laboratory and computational resources within DTU and could be involved in conducting tribological and characterization experiments, and performing material- and component-level simulations in solid mechanics.
This scholarship provides candidates an unique opportunity with both hands-on experiments and numerical studies in the areas of tribology, failure analysis, and structural integrity, advancing technologies in testing, modeling, and condition monitoring of wind turbine pitch bearings. Additional research areas include reliability assessment, mulitibody dynamics, and the interaction between wind turbine controls and mechanical components. Applicants having a background in mechanical and civil engineering, materials science, and other relevant fields are strongly encouraged to apply.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Develop theoretical and/or computational models of pitch bearing and connecting structures.
- Design and perform accelerated life experiments of specified components and analyze measurement data
- Compare experimental results to theoretical/computational models.
- Keep a well-maintained log of experimental activities.
- Disseminate research through peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other presentations
Qualifications
As a formal qualification, you must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Furthermore, strong English communication skills are essential. Applicants should be highly motivated, ambitious, and eager to seek and share knowledge, willing and able to work independently and in a team.
What We Require
- M.S. in Mechanical, Civil, Materials or related field.
- Research experience involving one or more of the following areas: numerical modeling, data analysis, and mechanical experiments
What We Would Like You To Have
- Experience with design, simulations, and testing on drivetrains, bearings, or other rotating machinery.
- Experience with analytical and finite element modeling.
- Experience with Labview, Matlab, Python, ANSYS or similar.
- Knowledge on wind turbine technologies, .
- Strong writing and presentation skills.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
Starting date is as soon as possible according to mutual agreement.
