Are you establishing your career as scientist within Wind Energy and looking for the best possible foundation for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions? It is right here in front of you. In a collaboration between DTU Wind and Energy Systems Department (DTU Wind) and Ørsted Wind Power, you will have the opportunity to break new ground at the absolute forefront of what is possible within Offshore Wind Energy. We have a PhD position which might be for you, who wishes to do researches on tropical cyclones (TC), one of the most powerful types of weather systems that exist, that will lead to safer farm design and operations.

You will have the opportunity to combine academic research with first-hand industrial practices with Ørsted and their wind farms in tropical cyclone prone regions. You will spend half of the time at DTU Wind and half of the time at Ørsted in Gentofte Copenhagen. At DTU Wind you will work with colleagues in the Resource Assessment and Meteorology section as well as other sections across Divisions in the whole department. At Ørsted you will become part of the Metocean assessment and Structural Load team.

You will model tropical cyclones for safer and more cost-effective offshore wind farm design and operations in different regions, and to present the results to the committee who works on future versions of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard on design conditions of wind turbines in tropical cyclone affected area.

Primary Research Subjects :

  • Systematically evaluate different types of models for TC parameters (numerical, conceptual and stochastic)
  • Identify challenges in modelling for different TC regions and provide recommendations
  • Calculate design parameters (winds and loads) based on the above two investigations
  • Develop approaches for uncertainty estimation in connection with cost

Expected outcome :

  • Quantification of the diverse characteristics of tropical cyclones in different regions, e.g., US, Taiwan and Japan.
  • Scientific guidelines for assessing the extreme meteorological conditions i.e., design values for turbines and foundations related to tropical cyclones in different regions.
  • Quantification of the uncertainty of estimated meteorological parameters.
  • Assessment of the impact from the uncertainties in coastal regions on loads and cost (e.g., through hazard models).
  • Relevant findings recommended for implementation in IEC standard on design conditions for wind turbines in tropical cyclone areas.

You are a curious and self-driven person, who is willing to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team You have background in atmospheric sciences or related disciplines and you  have basic programing skills (e.g., Matlab, Python). You have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. ). In addition, very importantly, you need to satisfy the MSCA DN Eligibility Criteria . We will not be able to employ you if you do not fulfill these criteria.

We offer an opportunity to work on one project in a series of exciting projects within the Horizon Europe AptWind Doctoral Network: The Atmospheric Physics and Turbulence for Wind Energy.   AptWind provides training for a new creative, entrepreneurial, innovative and resilient industry-oriented academic generation apt to face current and future challenges at the frontier of research within atmospheric flow physics and turbulence for wind energy applications, where you as a trained Doctoral Candidates (DCs) will be able to convert knowledge and ideas into new products, and services for economic and social benefit.

AptWind will not only facilitate fifteen DCs in reaching a high level of technical and project-specific excellence but will also provide you with many opportunities for developing skills that are transferable to a wider landscape of opportunities. You will share your work time 50-50 between academia and industry. After completing the program, you will have a thorough understanding of the process from research via innovation to industry implementation and a strong career-defining network.

AptWind is funded by Horizon Europe through grant number 101119550, see www.aptwind.eu for more information.
