ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Neurology at Zealand University Hospital holds a profile as the acute and specialised department in the region in the field. The department provides neurological services to the entire Region Zealand. Our in-patient clinic includes two wards with a total of 56 beds of which 26 beds constitute our acute neurovascular ward. Our out-patient clinic includes the general out-patient clinic as well as an infusion center, a Neurophysiological Center, among others.

Annually we have (2022):

  • 6.900 acute admissions
  • 400 planned admissions
  • 22.000 out-patient visits

We are a multidisciplinary department. Our current staff includes 28 consultants, and 23 junior doctors.

The clinical activity of the department includes all neurological subspecialities.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

The subspeciality of stroke is a major clinical focus area of our department. We have a decidated neurovascular ward providing acute stroke diagnostics and treatment the entire population of Region Zealand. This includes IVT (thrombolysis), sonography, an out-patient-clinic for TIA and minor stroke patients as well as regular in-patient treatment in the acute phase of stroke. We have 13 consultants/senior registrars affiliated with the neurovascular ward, and a multidisciplinary approach with a number of other health professionals related to stroke. We carry out simulation training of acute stroke admissions on a monthly basis as a means to ensure quality for our IVT patients.

We wish to employ a consultant with deep knowledge of the field, and the motivation and energy for strengthening and developing our neurovascular field, both in relation to the patients and the organisation.

The number of stroke patients remains high, and a high quality approach is vital for both the individual patients as well as society. There will be a need for strong collaboration within the department, with the pre-hospital center, and with other departments.

The clinical tasks will have a focus on the in-patient ward, but may also involve stroke patients in our out-patient clinic. The daily activities will include direct patient contact as well as supervision of and collaboration with nurses, junior doctors, and other health professionals.

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in neurology and clinical professor of neurology with special focus on neurovascular disease, the Department of Neurology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

We expect clinical research of an international level and quality within the field of stroke, and we expect a significant contribution to the further development of our clinical research unit in general.

The clinical research unit of our department currently includes 4 other senior researchers supporting a number of junior researchers, several of these as PhD students. We are in the process of establishing a new position as consultant in neurology and clinical professor of neurology with special focus on headache in addition to this position.

Our department is heavily involved in training and teaching medical students. We take pride in providing good courses for our upcoming colleagues, and taking part in this will be an important task.
