The increasing share of variable renewable energy (VRE), mainly wind and solar power, brings new conditions to the energy system due to the inherent variability and forecast uncertainty. Power imbalances from VRE forecast errors pose challenges to the reliability and security of the power system. Balancing requirements close to real-time are expected to expand due to increased VRE forecast uncertainty, challenging the security of supply. To overcome these challenges, more operational reserves need to be procured in the future. The type of reserves deployed (either manual or automatic; from distributed resources or from larger centralized resources; from electrical sources or from other energy vectors) depends on the balancing principles and markets, as well as the energy mix in different countries. The ongoing European-wide integration and harmonization of the balancing markets and principles can also impact the required reserves. Identifying the roles of different technologies to provide different balancing services is crucial for improved operational planning and reliability of the future energy systems.

In this project, you will develop and apply a method for bidirectional coupling between an expansion planning model and a balancing model used for dimensioning manual (mFRR) and automatic reserves (aFRR and FCR) to handle forecast uncertainties from VRE. Working with other researchers, you will study the impact of increasing VRE forecast errors on European power systems and analyze the optimal technology mix to mitigate the imbalances and provide sufficient reserves. These operational reserves can be obtained from flexible generators and loads (demand response), from neighboring regions, and from other energy sectors, namely, hydrogen, transport, and heat. Current balancing markets rely mainly on dispatchable power generation (e.g., hydro power and gas power plants). However, the expected electrification of other sectors could bring significant additional flexibility sources to the balancing markets, requiring the integration of balancing markets in the modelling of highly sector-coupled energy systems.

You will be part of the Muessli project (https://cresym.eu/muessli/ ), where you will interact with researchers and experts from multiple European countries. This requires good communications skills, but also allows you to co-operate with leading European research institutes. The strong co-operation both within DTU and beyond allows you to accomplish the ambitious objectives of the project.

Responsibilities and qualifications
For this PhD project we are seeking a candidate with:

  • Capability to understand system-level phenomena in power and energy systems
  • Background in power and/or energy system modeling
  • Experience with mathematical optimization
  • Preferably, general knowledge on how electricity markets, including balancing markets, work in Europe
  • Preferably, experience of applied statistics and/or time series analysis

In your work, you will:

  • Develop a method for linking an expansion planning model with a balancing model, with sector coupling represented in both models (building on already existing models)
  • Develop a tool to implement the developed method, applicable for analysing a European multi-country energy system
  • Apply the tool in a pan-European energy system model, studying the optimal ways of mitigating the growing imbalances due to increasing VRE forecast errors
  • Work closely with other researchers in power and energy system modeling

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Preference will be given to degrees in power and energy system analyses, or closely related disciplines.

The candidate should have a good foundation in programming with Python. Knowledge of the GAMS language is beneficial but not necessary.

We expect the candidate to have a strong interest in analyzing future power and energy systems and qualitative research experience. The working language of the project is English and thus the candidate must have suitable skills in both written and spoken English.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education
