Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as professor in Applied Mathematics and Integrated Natural Science from March 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Department of Science and Environment is one of four departments at Roskilde University. The department conducts basic and applied research within medicinal biology, molecular biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, physics and mathematics. Bachelor and interdisciplinary Master programs are offered within these areas. Roskilde University as well as the Department has a strategic focus on interdisciplinary science and external collaboration, and the Professor must be willing to support this strategy and be motivated to develop new collaboration platforms.

The department is organized into four sections: Mathematics & Physics, Environmental Dynamics, Molecular & Medical Biology, and Chemistry. We work interdisciplinary across sections and departments, often in collaboration with private companies, public institutions, other universities and NGO’s. The position is anchored in the section for Mathematics & Physics (IMFUFA) currently consisting of 17 professors/associate professors/assistant professors, as well as a varying number of PhD-students, postdocs, technical staff, etc. The research focus within the mathematics group is mainly on mathematical modeling of biological and physical systems with an emphasis on applying and developing dynamical system theory.

Responsibilities and tasks
The professor’s main task is to further develop the field of Applied Mathematics and Integrated Natural Science by leading and further developing a research team, and to undertake research and research-based teaching within mathematics.
The professor is expected to maintain a high record of publication in high-quality journals, to encourage research achievement and to take a leading role in developing and promoting an active research culture. You will also be expected to take a leading role in large-scale national and international fundraising to help securing funds for the development of the group and department, and to participate actively in research networks. The Professor will teach in an interdisciplinary environment and engage in problem-oriented project work with extensive student involvement and responsibility. You will be required to teach, supervise and assess students at BSc and MSc levels as well as PhD students within mathematics. This also implies taking a leading role in the development of the field in relation to teaching. As professor you will be required to participate in post-doctoral training and be responsible for the supervision of assistant professors as well as take part in academic assessments. The position also includes a duty to actively share knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in the public debate within your field. The Professor’s tasks will also include activities within student recruitment and popular dissemination of science.

You are also required to be enterprising, to possess good interpersonal skills, and to be a visible, active participant in the daily activities in the group and the department, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the department. You are also expected to be able to take a leading responsibility for the continuation of a creative and pleasant working environment. Finally, you will be expected to take a strategic responsibility for management and leadership through engagement in the group and the Department.

The ideal candidate is expected to be able to teach in English immediately, and within three years acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient for participation in departmental and university committees and meetings.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree within the research area. Documented scientific qualifications equivalent to associate professor level are required. In addition, the candidate should:

  • have a strong research focus on applied mathematics, with focus on mathematical modelling of biological, chemical, and physical phenomena
  • be proven interdisciplinary and have an international research experience and strong international network
  • be an expert in mathematical modeling including computational methods, e.g. application and development of high-performance GPU based computing
  • have proven ability to define own research focus
  • have shown commitment to communicating about natural science to the general public
  • have experience with development of new courses/teaching programs within her/his field of expertise
  • have proven study-administrative skills e.g., in developing integrated education programs
  • have a portfolio showing responsibilities for different course teaching and project supervisions - including supervision at Ph.D. and post.doc levels

Applicants are referred to the university’s Faculty expectations for specifications on the required level of qualifications within research, teaching, networking, fundraising, impact and outreach etc.

Candidates who are not native Danish speakers are expected to achieve a working knowledge of Danish within three years allowing them to read official documents in Danish and to participate in the mentioned administrative tasks, collaboration and networking. Roskilde University will make appropriate Danish classes available.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to:
  • original scientific production at an international level in relation to the above-mentioned field(s),
  • research topic and potential for development of the field,
  • experience with providing dynamic leadership in the development of research and teaching,
  • ability to and a track record in securing external research funding and leading a research team of young scientists (phd’s and postdocs),
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • documented popular dissemination of science,
  • experience in teaching and education, including own pedagogical development , contributions to the pedagogical development of a team of teachers as well as participation in doctoral school activities
  • experience with administrative tasks related to teaching and development of study programs (study boards, heads of study etc.)
  • scientific network and ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
  • willingness and capability of teaching in a truly interdisciplinary environment. The university builds on problem-oriented project work, student involvement and student responsibilities. Thus, experiences in project guidance is an advantage.
  • fluent in English

Terms of employment
The employment is on full time, 37 hours per week and you will refer to Susanne Sørensen

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

Commencing salary will be minimum DKK 703.060,99 kr. kr. per year (1st April 2024 level) plus pension contribution (17,1 %).
