BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

Are you passionate about marine mammals and want to help assessing the status and population developments of seals, dolphins and porpoises this may be the position you have been looking for. At Aarhus University, we seek a highly talented researcher with strong analytical skills to monitor marine mammals, primarily in Danish waters, and provide research-based advice on the impacts of different pressures. Applications are invited for a 4-year researcher position at the Department of Ecoscience at Aarhus University, Denmark.

Expected start date and duration of employment

This is a four-year time limited position; the expected start date is 1 April 2024 or as soon possible.

Job description

The position will focus on monitoring of marine mammals, in particular seals and porpoises, and on analysis of the collected data to better understand the sensitivity of these species to various environmental pressures. The successful candidate is expected to help collecting data on the distribution and abundance of different species of marine mammals. This involves participation in aerial surveys, passive acoustic monitoring programmes, and satellite tracking of seals and porpoises. The job involves maintenance and setup of equipment, field work, data analysis, writing of reports and scientific papers, all in close cooperation with experienced colleagues. The results of the monitoring work constitute the basis for the research-based advice we provide to the Danish Ministry of Environment and private companies on how marine mammals are affected by human disturbances and other pressures on the marine environment. The researcher is expected to develop independent research projects during the employment, in close collaboration with colleagues in the Section for Marine Mammal Research.

The successful candidate will join a strong research team with a long tradition for collaborating closely on marine mammal monitoring and on providing research-based advice. The team includes leading experts in underwater acoustics, satellite telemetry, biologging, photogrammetry, energetics, modelling, drone and aircraft monitoring, genetics, contaminants, animal health, and data analyses, and is thus the ideal setting for developing a wide range of new skills in an inspiring environment. The candidate will get the opportunity to help developing new projects and contribute to developing applications for external funding. The position thus offers a unique opportunity to work on a wide range of topics and to help acquire new scientific knowledge that is needed for managing marine mammals.

Your profile

Qualifications for the researcher level at Aarhus University include a PhD degree or equivalent, a relevant research profile and a strong publication record. Prior experience with research-based advice to authorities and/or private companies is not required but will be an advantage.

Required skills

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in biology, marine management, or environmental engineering
  • Knowledge of marine mammal ecology and marine biology
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Proficiency in Danish is not a requirement, but will be an advantage.
  • Experience with project management is an advantage
  • Ability to handle, operate and maintain technical equipment
  • Experience with handling and processing large volumes of data
  • Previous experience with one or more of the following methods is not required, but will be an advantage: passive acoustic monitoring, aerial surveys, distance sampling, drone monitoring and satellite telemetry.
