Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as assistant professor of Mobilities and Planning from January 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to 3 years.

The Department of People and Technology at RUC is the university's largest department, encompassing a wide range of disciplines centered on the interactions between humans, society, and technology. Key areas of focus include sustainable transitions, social interventions and entrepreneurship, urban planning, digital transformation, data science, and work and health studies, among others. This position is associated with the MOSPUS research group, which explores the spatial reorganization of society. The group investigates the dynamic relationships between everyday life, culture, settlement patterns, industries, mobility, social exclusion, intercultural relations, new technologies, and the creative industries—calling for innovative theoretical and practical approaches

We are seeking a candidate with a strong research background in the interdisciplinary field of mobilities research, with expertise in qualitative and participatory methods. The successful applicant will contribute to the Interreg ØKS project Green Mobility Shift (SHIFT)—for more information, visit SHIFT Project: https://gate21.dk/projekt/green-mobility-shift.

SHIFT aims to advance sustainable transportation by enhancing planning processes to better align with citizens' needs. The initiative brings together transportation companies, regions, municipalities, research institutions, and civil society organizations from the Øresund region to develop the SHIFT model, a joint Danish-Swedish effort based on the European Avoid-Shift-Improve (A-S-I) framework.

The candidate will primarily contribute to Work Package 3 (WP3), which focuses on methodology. In WP3, methods for the SHIFT model will be identified and impact assessed, incorporating the latest research on citizen engagement and travel behavior change. This will be complemented by new research and teaching on sustainable mobility initiatives and a holistic approach to transportation planning. In addition to contributing to the development of the SHIFT model, the candidate is expected to conduct research related to specific project case studies.

In order to follow the cases in the SHIFT-project, candidates that speaks and reads Danish and Swedish will be preferred.

The applicant will mainly be associated with the following two study programs:

  • By & Plan (Master)
  • Plan, By og Proces (Bachelor)

Teaching tasks consist partly of project supervision and partly of course teaching, as well as the planning of teaching activities. The employment includes participation and credit hours for completion of Certificate of University Teaching and Learning at Roskilde University.

Responsibilities and Tasks
The assistant professor’s primary responsibilities will include conducting research, with duties related to publication, scientific communication, and research-based teaching, including examination responsibilities within mobilities and planning research. Additionally, the role requires contributing to the dissemination of knowledge to the broader society, including engaging in public debates. The position may also involve limited participation in other activities.

The ideal candidate is expected to complete the educational training program for assistant professors at RUC, which involves up to 220 hours of training.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in mobility, planning, and/or urban studies. The following areas of expertise are required:
  • Mobility research
  • Urban planning
  • Everyday life studies
  • Qualitative methods
  • Participatory methods

The successful candidate should be proactive, possess strong communication skills, and be an engaged and visible participant in the department’s daily activities. A willingness to collaborate across disciplines and contribute to interdisciplinary work within the department is essential.

When evaluating candidates, the following will be considered:
  • Relevance and quality of research topics
  • Scientific output and publications
  • Research potential and ability to apply research findings
  • Experience in teaching and education
  • Other academic involvement, such as organizing research conferences or seminars
  • Ability to contribute to the department’s internal and external collaborations

Terms of employment
The employment is full time 37 hours per week and you will refer to Dean Bjarke Oxlund.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Dean will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
